Adwords or Pay Per Click (PPC), also known as search engine marketing (SEM), is an opportunity offered by many search engines that allows you to pay for advertising placement on chosen keywords within that search engine. These ads are located in the sponsored search section, often found at the top, right side, or bottom of a search engine results page (SERP).

 

With Pay Per Click, as the name suggests, you pay only when someone clicks on your ad. The cost per click (CPC) is primarily based on a bidding system; you will be bidding against others who are also advertising on the same keywords.

Essentially, the more you bid, the higher your placement will be within the sponsored search section. There are other factors that affect how much your cost per click will be and how your ad will be positioned.
